Persian New Year, Yummy Baklava & Beads...

Another happy week around here, made even better with sunshine & warm weather...Happy Persian New Year...the first day of the 13 day holiday was a few days ago, as always we had some fun getting together at my parents...I even made my famous Baklava, the recipe in this link is not how I make mine all, mine has no almonds, rose water or saffron, mine has honey, walnuts & a few other secrets...below are some photos of the fun we all had...

Here is my Baklava, on the table with a ton of other goodies & sweets...

Mom's HalfSeen Table for Nowruz, since this not a religious holiday every Persian family has their own book of faith on the table, ours is a great book of poem by Hafez the very famous Persian poet...

Mom made a ton of very yummy food as always...

Parents & hubby...

right to left, Grace, mom, me, & Grace's friend Maria...

Sophia & I...

The kids & I...I just love playing with them...

This past Wednesday I had a great student named Sharon...she is already hooked & she was a natural...

I did make a lot of  yummy beads this past week as well, most of them are listed in my etsy shop now...photo shows a few of them...
Ok now we come to the bead giveaway part, last week's two yummy focal beads go to "our favorite Things" please send your address...for this week I have the very cool mohter pearl pinky silver glass encased focal in the top photo...enter to win by making a comment on this post...

Looks like you had wonderful times--with family and making beautiful beads. Nothing better than good food, those you love, and doing what you love. CJ

Hi Jelveh, I love the beads and Happy New Year. What type of plants are sitting on the table and on the floor in front of the table with the inspirational book of poetry on it? And the baklava, yummy. My Favorite Things is my business name, I finally got my google thingy set up but am still a novice with it. You have my address but I'll resend it. I'm glad your weather is better, it's still cold here.
Your mother is a lovely lady.

Peace

Thanks, Jelveh, I think I gained 5 lbs just by looking at all the yummy food :) I love baklava but your recipe sounds even better! Glad you got to enjoy good food, family & sunshine and, of course, creating beautiful beads. I love this week's giveaway because the swirl actually looks like my initial "J"! Happy Persian New Year to you :)

ok the green grass is just raw wheat that we put on a plate with some water and some cotton fabric for a few days when it starts to sprout you take the fabric off & it grows green to whatever shape your plate or container was, they dont last long just a about two weeks. Mom makes one for every member of the family...
on the 13 day of the celebrations, persians traditionally go on a picnic, around these parts, large parks get rented by organizers & you can go have your picnic with other Persians, while there is music, handy crafts & more, however it is a nightmare to find parking, so we stopped going, we just go to a local park & hang...
you are supposed to take the green grass with you on this day & give it back to the earth by putting in a river or lake...the whole celebration of Spring or nowruz is all about new starts for the earth, for you, for your life...its a very lovely holiday...
the stupid government of Iran wanted to have stopped a few years back and Iranians protested & so the celebration stays, the government said it was not a good holiday since instead of god, the holiday celebrates & thanks the earth, sun, moon, trees, water, air for giving us life...
the last Wednesday before the new years day there is also a celebration, that one is of Fire...last year when I was teaching in Turkey one of my students who came from Iran, told me that in Iran you are no longer allowed to celebrate on that Wednesday, so my students & I decided to have our own Wednesday Celebration...it was great...there is photos of that somewhere on the blog, I should find them & show you...
Thanks for all the kind words...

Wow, I love Baklava, I would love to be able to make it. I only find it at one festival here and then sometimes this one grocery store makes it. The food looks sooo good on your table.

You where really busy on your bead making they really look good.
